California homeowners know that earthquakes aren't a matter of if, but when. That’s why the Earthquake Soft-Story (ESS) retrofit grant program, offered by the California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP), is such a valuable opportunity. ESS is designed to help protect homes from earthquake damage by offering grants of up to $13,000 to qualifying homeowners for seismic retrofitting.
What is a Soft-Story Retrofit?
A soft-story building typically has a living space built over a garage or open area, making it vulnerable during seismic activity. Retrofitting strengthens these weak spots, helping to prevent collapse or severe damage.
Are You Eligible?
You may qualify for an ESS grant if:
You own and live in the house you wish to retrofit
Your house is in an eligible ZIP Code area
It was built before 2000
It has a living space over the garage
It’s two stories or fewer
It's wood-framed construction
It’s built on level or slightly sloped ground
You have not already completed a soft-story retrofit
